You’re Not In Control

As COVID-19 ravages our daily lives, there are many lessons we can learn from the havoc it has wrought upon the world. Like literal millions of others, I was furloughed from my day job for a few months. I didn’t think it was going to happen to me, just as I’m sure those millions weren’t expecting to find themselves in the same position.

I’m not here to complain about the situation. I’m here to share with you the epiphany it brought me to: We are not in control of our lives. We love to think we are, but my friends, I’m sorry to say that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you have a Type A personality like I do, this is an extremely difficult reality to digest.

Before the coronavirus upended life as we knew it, I’d always tell people who were going through hard times “God’s got it handled. No matter what happens, it’s His will and you’ll always be where you are meant to be.” It’s so easy to parrot back trite sayings like this without stopping to contemplate what you’re truly saying…or even if you really believe it yourself.

As bad as it may sound, it’s ok to doubt. It shouldn’t be your constant state of being as a Christian, but questioning things keeps our faith fresh and stronger than ever before. It’s also a step we need to take to ensure we are taking the path God has laid out for us.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” If you’ve lost your job, have you stopped to think there might be a reason other than COVID-19? Was this just the catalyst to get you to open your eyes and see you were meant for something greater?

In this life, we will endure tough times; it’s just how it is and no one is immune. But take heart, for God has so much good in store for you. James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him,” and that’s better than any paycheck or promotion you could be receiving right this moment.
